Fort Scott National Historic Site is located in southeastern Kansas and commemorates the frontier military post of the same name that was active from 1842 to 1853. The site also serves as a reminder of the important role that African Americans played in the history of the American West.

During the early 1840s, Fort Scott was one of a string of forts established by the United States government along the western frontier. It was intended to help protect settlers from attacks by Native Americans and to keep the peace between different tribes.
